What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Often, our patients say they aren’t sure if their situation is a dental emergency or not, and it's true that certain dental issues don’t require immediate attention.
However, we always encourage you to call our office if you need advice or you’re unsure; it’s better to be safe than sorry!
These are the situations that require immediate care:
- Knocked-out tooth — Time is critical if your tooth gets completely knocked out. Without touching its roots, try to reinsert your tooth or store it inside your cheek or in a glass of milk. Call us right away!
- Severe toothache — Tooth pain that wakes you up at night or doesn’t subside with over-the-counter pain relievers could indicate a serious infection. If you have intense pain or swelling, you should contact our office.
- Broken or cracked tooth — Even if it doesn’t hurt, a broken or cracked tooth can allow harmful bacteria to enter the area and lead to an infection. It’s best to call us for an appointment.
- Broken or lost restoration — When you lose a dental filling or your crown comes off, it can be dangerous to leave your tooth exposed. We recommend an emergency appointment.
- Facial trauma or soft tissue injury — If you sustain an injury to your jaw, lips, cheeks, or gums, please get in touch with us. We can advise you on whether you should go to the emergency room or visit our office.
